How To Style Your Psoriasis

I recently shared my personal psoriasis story with you guys, and I was surprised to learn that many of my followers have the condition as well. While it’s certainly not a journey that I’d wish on someone else, it was very heartening to read your comments and exchange experiences, and to know that there’s a community of psoriasis warriors out there supporting each other. One question I got on social media was what to wear when you’re going through a flare up, so today I wanted to share my styling tips for exactly that.

Let’s face it, psoriasis isn’t fun. But it doesn’t have to prevent you from feeling confident and going out into the world. While you may feel the urge to hide away, know that your confidence is what people will notice first. Through my journey with psoriasis and as part of the INSIDE PERSPECTIVE campaign, which raises awareness about psoriasis and the importance of treating from within, I wanted to help people understand how I began to feel confident in my own skin while living with this condition so that they can do the same – because if you feel good, you look good!

What Fabrics To Wear & Avoid
You might be surprised to find out that certain fabrics can trigger your psoriasis or make it worse. Synthetic materials like polyester are not breathable fabrics and can often be scratchy, which is super irritating for the skin. If you’re having a flare up, go for breezy cotton pieces that don’t cling to the skin. Go for a comfy cotton tee, your favorite loose mom jeans, and sneakers for a cool casual look. If you’re headed on a night out, try a swing dress, your trusty leather jacket and boots. If you’re feeling self-conscious about plaques on your legs, go for tights (especially now that it’s cold!). During the Summer, flowy maxi dresses are a great option with sandals. Also consider how you’re washing your clothes. Use fragrance-free, gentle detergents, as scented products may aggravate your psoriasis.

How To Hide Redness
My rule of thumb when I have a flare up is to avoid wearing red, orange or yellow. These colors tend to accentuate the visibility of your plaques. Dark colors like black, navy blue, dark green and brown are great for toning down reds. Though darker colors tend to look best, if you’re worried about your psoriasis being visible on your clothing you may want to try light colors and patterns. They don’t show flakes as clearly as dark colors do. Just don’t go for overly bright or neon colors – neutrals like beige are much better for masking redness.

Confidence Is Key
As I said before, one the most important things you can put on when dealing with your psoriasis is confidence. If you put off a positive, assertive energy – chances are people won’t even notice what’s going on with your skin. And if they do, your confidence sends a message that it’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of (and it truly isn’t!). I know from experience how much psoriasis can affect your self-esteem, but if you work on accepting it and choosing to love yourself anyways, this will greatly improve your mood and outlook. While you can’t always control when plaques appear, you can control how you feel about it. Know that there will always be judgmental people out there no matter what you look like, so being concerned with what others think about the way you look is futile. Embrace your gorgeous self!
